May 21, 2016 will mark the date of the 'new beginning' in the golfing life of J.R. Warthen. He will be playing in the San Luis Obispo County Amateur Championship this weekend which will be his first opportunity to compete in a tournament in 32 months. He has been successful in this event in the past, taking the title in all three of his previous appearances (2002-2004). Eleven years have passed, invaluable experience has been gained and he is as motivated as ever to perform.
The championship will be held on two separate county owned golf courses located within 30 miles of one another, Chalk Mountain GC in Atascadero and Dairy Creek GC in San Luis Obispo. The courses are well maintained and provide unique layouts, both of which obtain ample undulation and a meandering hole design. The opening round will be played at Chalk Mountain GC and the second and final round will be held at Dairy Creek GC. Historically, the winds blow steadily at Dairy Creek in the afternoons during this time of year and you can expect this to pose a solid test for most of the players in the field.
Wish J.R. the best of luck in his return to tournament golf as he attempts to make it four for four in this event. Check back on Saturday evening for a tournament update and a summary of round one action.
