J.R. is a California Central Coast native, born in San Luis Obispo, CA and raised in the 5 Cities. Athletics have been his life from age 5, playing soccer and then adding baseball, basketball and wave riding into the mix. He became an avid Bodyboarder and surf videographer when he was 15 and went on to create a full-length Bodyboarding film titled 'Adolescence' released June 2, 1999, when he was 18. The film features the top riders at that time, surfing in Mexico, California and Hawaii.
Shortly after Adolescence was released, J.R. was mysteriously enticed by the game of golf and immediately dropped everything in pursuit of par. As the challenge that golf presents settled its way deep into J.R.'s heart, it wasn't long until it became his life. From 2002 to 2006 he was able to win 12 Amateur titles, earn a 50% athletic scholarship to play for San Diego State University, compete in an NCAA Division 1 National Championship and graduate with a degree in Communication. He then turned professional in 2007, finished runner up on The Golf Channel's Big Break Mesquite, Monday qualified into a Web.com Tour event, made it through to the 2nd Stage of PGA Tour qualifying and won seven events on the California Players Tour in less than two seasons.
Without acquiring financial backing, he has been unable to compete on a regular basis since the end of 2008. However, J.R. has been reinstated to amateur status and is competing as often as possible in his home state of California. You can expect many more victories out of this man and do not be surprised when you see him competing at the highest level in the years to come!
