After Saturdays round of very good execution from tee to green, J.R. knew that if he did the same thing on Sunday the putts were bound to start dropping. He was correct in that assumption, making 7 birdies in the final round against one bogey, carding a score of 66 (-6) and a 9th place finish (-7 overall).
This top 10 finish has provided J.R. with an exemption into next years Southern California Amateur, the California Amateur, the Southern California Mid-Amateur and a few other big events. He is very pleased with the patience and resilience he showed over the weekend. Steadily improving and calmly implementing what he learned from the opening day and first two rounds of the event. His ball striking improved dramatically and he is very excited about what that will mean moving forward into the upcoming USGA qualifiers.
J.R.'s next event is the U.S. Amateur Championship qualifier at La Cumbre C.C. in Santa Barbara, CA on Monday July 18th. This event is a 36 hole qualifier where the top 4 or 5 players will qualify for the championship proper August 15-21 at Oakland Hills C.C. in Boomfield Hills, Michigan. The winner and runner-up of the U.S. Amateur receive exemptions into next years Masters Tournament, an opportunity of a lifetime to say the least.
He will be working diligently at his craft as always over the next 6 days in preparation for the July 18th qualifier. His ball striking is solid, his short game is pure, his mental approach is calculated and he is very optimistic about his ability to see continued success on the golf course in the near future. Wish him luck as he continues to progress and attempts to take his game to the national stage!
